Latest Visa & Immigration Updates for Pakistani International Students – February 2025
As of February 2025, several major study destinations, including the UK, Canada, the USA, Ireland, and Australia, have introduced new visa and immigration policies impacting Pakistani international students. Here’s a breakdown of the latest updates:
United Kingdom
The UK government has implemented stricter visa policies for international students. Since January 2024, new international students (except postgraduate researchers and government-sponsored scholars) are no longer allowed to bring dependents. This decision follows a sharp increase in international student migration, with many bringing family members.
Canada
Canada has revised its policies to better regulate the transition of international students to permanent residency. The key updates include:
- Extended Work Permits: Students graduating from select programs will now have the opportunity to obtain work permits beyond the previous three-year limit.
- Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Eligibility Changes: From November 2024, only students enrolled in programs aligned with Canada’s long-term labor market needs will be eligible for PGWP, ensuring a better match between education and job market requirements.
Australia
Australia has introduced multiple policy changes to better manage its international student sector:
- Visa Fee Increase: As of July 1, 2024, the student visa fee has increased from AUD 710 to AUD 1,600.
- Genuine Student Requirement: On March 23, 2024, the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement was replaced with the Genuine Student (GS) requirement, focusing on assessing students’ intent more effectively.
- Work Hour Limitations: The previously relaxed work hour restrictions have been reinstated, capping international students’ work hours at 24 per week during academic sessions.
New Zealand
New Zealand has taken steps to make studying more attractive for international students by expanding work rights for spouses and partners. This allows family members of international students to work while their partner studies, offering greater financial flexibility and support.
